“All it takes is one catastrophe – whether it’s mold in the house or your car breaks down. There has to be more resources for people like me who do work,” says Linda Nguyen, a San Jose mom who was able to keep her and her 14-year-old son housed with help from the Santa Clara County Homelessness Prevention System. They are one of the 18,400 households – more than 33,000 people – who were able to stay stably housed through the program, which is proving that providing flexible financial assistance and supportive services is a successful and cost-effective intervention to homelessness. With thousands of families living paycheck to paycheck and just one emergency expense away from losing their housing, we must continue investing in homelessness prevention programs to keep more families like Nguyen's in their homes.
