Today, we lost a cherished friend and APANO community member. Representative Hòa Nguyễn was a true inspiration, someone who led from the heart and touched countless lives. Her impact was profound and her love for community deep. She has been a pillar in our community, working to build political power and drive meaningful change for years. From tackling education disparities and proposing legislation for immigrant rights, to becoming a champion for universal child care in the State Legislature, Rep. Nguyễn has poured her heart and soul into this work for so many. Nguyễn rose to prominence in the Oregon Legislature as part of a 2022 class of five Vietnamese American lawmakers who combined created the largest group of the diaspora in any state legislature across the country. Even during her months-long fight with cancer, she has been on the floor of the State Capitol fighting for Oregonians' rights to thrive. She has always taken the time to center the voices of educators, caregivers, children, and immigrant and refugee families here in Oregon - and her advocacy and compassion will continue to guide and inspire us in the work that we do. For APANO, Rep. Nguyễn has been more than an elected official - she carries a legacy as a champion, colleague, and foundational leader, and most of all as a friend. We share our condolences to the family, staff, and friends of Representative Hòa Nguyễn. In remembering her, we also honor her legacy by continuing to make sure her vision for collective liberation and access to resources for all will live on. (fb)
