Did you guess the right answer to yesterday's trivia? Eulachon, also known as hooligan! These fatty little fish play a big role in Alaska's ecosystem and are vital to the health of our endangered Cook Inlet beluga whales, as well as salmon. At last year's Board of Fish meeting, Alaska Wildlife Alliance wrote a proposal to restore the Susitna River commercial eulachon harvest limit back to 100 tons. The proposal was approved by the Board, providing 200,000 more pounds of forage fish to the spring Susitna River ecosystem, including beluga whales! Check out this great essay by Trustees for Alaska on the role of wildlife science, ethics, and political policy in predator control, told through the lens of Mulchatna bear control. "When we strip away the camouflage of policy language and politics, we’re left with a deeper reckoning: Alaska’s predator control programs aren’t just a test of wildlife science. They’re a mirror reflecting how we, as humans, relate to other animals and “the wild,” often choosing domination over coexistence." (fb)
