As we observe Juneteenth, a day that marks the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States, it is imperative to reflect on the profound contributions of Black Americans to our agricultural history. This celebration is not just about liberation; it is also about recognizing the rich legacy and the invaluable skills that Black farmers and agriculturalists have bestowed upon our society. U.S. agriculture was built by enslaved Africans who were brought to this country to cultivate the land, and in many ways that structure persists today. Both domestically and internationally, the realities of unfair labor practices in the agricultural system continue to go unseen and disproportionately affect BIPOC farmers and farm workers. We can’t consider the health of our planet without considering the health of our people. With our stringent Farmer & Worker Fairness Pillar, Regenerative Organic Certified® not only provides a foundation for agriculture as a solution to the climate crisis, but also a road map for restoring an ethical and regenerative agriculture system. Every year on June 17th, the global community comes together to observe World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought. This day serves as a reminder of the importance of sustainable land management and the urgent need to protect one of Earth’s most valuable resources, soil. Desertification and drought are pressing global issues, as fertile soils turn to dust, agricultural productivity diminishes. Primarily a damaging result of industrial agriculture practices, desertification and drought threaten food security, biodiversity, and ultimately, our very survival. As the bedrock of our food system, healthy, fertile soils, nurtured through regenerative organic practices, hold the key to combating the severe consequences of desertification and drought. The healthier the soil, the more efficiently it can absorb and store water. Hydrated soils reduce runoff, erosion, and flooding; as well as increase resilience in the face of drought. Additionally, healthy soils are better positioned to filter water of pollutants before it is absorbed into groundwater or flows downstream, leading to healthier communities on- and off-land. (fb)
