On September 30, communities across Canada observe National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Orange Shirt Day. This day honors the survivors of residential schools, their families, and the children who never made it home. It is a time to reflect on the harmful legacy of these institutions, which attempted to erase Indigenous cultures, languages, and identities through forced assimilation. Wearing orange has a powerful meaning. The tradition began with Phyllis Webstad, a residential school survivor whose brand-new orange shirt was taken from her on her first day of school. That shirt came to symbolize the loss of culture, identity, and childhood for thousands of Indigenous children. Today, orange is worn as a collective statement that every child matters and to show solidarity with Indigenous peoples in the ongoing process of healing and reconciliation. 🧡 (fb)

UIC serves Indigenous individuals from North Central and South America the Caribbean and Pacific Islands prioritizing culturally affirming health and wellness services communitybased participatory research CBPR advocacy community programming and training and technical assistance. Guided by Traditional Indigenous Knowledge and a commitment to intergenerational healing UIC centers its work on building sustainable solutions that honor Indigenous knowledge while addressing systemic inequities affecting Indigenous communities in urban environments. By integrating traditional practices with innovative programming UIC creates pathways for healing kinship and connection P U R P O S E M I S S I O N M I S S I O N Driving the inclusion of Urban Natives by indigenizing existing infrastructures and ensuring cultural humility in health and wellness services to build more equitable inclusive and prosperous communities.
