Today, in celebration of Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, MBT would like to highlight Allie Song! Allie has been taking dance for two years and has also learned dances from the Philippines with her family. The word "Itik" means duck in Tagalog, and Itik-itik is a folk dance from the Philippines. The dance originated in Surigao, Philippines, and is known for mimicking the movements of ducks that inhabit the rice fields and rivers of Pangasinan. Dancers imitate wading, flying, and splashing water movements. Legend has it that Itik Itik originated when a young Filipina woman, Kanang, was asked to perform the Sibay (another important Filipino dance) at a baptism ceremony. While performing the Sibay, Kanang was inspired by the music and improvised with steps inspired by ducks. Her captivating performance was so compelling that it sparked a new form of expression within the community. In the present day, Itik Itik would be performed ballroom style at social gatherings.
