steffie was seen hanging from a building for several days and the finder was worried there could be a problem. when i arrived i saw that steffie was a silver-haired bat! their scientific name is lasionycteris noctivagans, which means “hairy, night-wandering bat”. silver-haired bats are both gorgeous and talented. it has been recently discovered that these bats not only echolocate, but sing love songs! (to listen to their song, check out the link in my bio) silver-haired bats are migratory, so i suspect that steffie was resting during her journey due to the cool nights we had been experiencing. i brought her home to make sure she was ok, gave her fluids and hand fed her mealworms so she would have plenty of energy to continue her travels. once the weather cleared up, i brought her back close to where she was found, and she was off! now she can continue wandering the night skies until she arrives at her summer home 🌙🦇 #happytravels #nightwanderer #lasionycterisnoctivagans #silverhairedbat #wildliferescue #batrehabilitation #migration #batsarecool (fb)
spring is finally here and it’s time for the bats who have spent the winter at the bat b&b to go back home! this takes an incredible amount of work. all the bats who were hibernating need to be checked for body condition, injuries, and flight proficiency. there were 64 bats that needed care all at the same time, making it very difficult to find space for everyone while at the same time catering to each bat’s specific needs. but after a lot of shuffling and stacking and making sure bats in the flight enclosures all got along, each bat had an appropriate place and an individual treatment plan. next i had to create a release plan. bats have an incredible sense of direction and will try to get back home when they are released. they have a better chance of getting home if they are released as close as possible to where they were found. so i mapped the location of each bat and plotted out areas to release each bat so they could all safely return home. once the weather at night was warm and clear, the bats could finally be released! each bat was identified and placed in a soft mesh bag for transport. each bag was labeled with the bats name and their final destination. then, after many long nights and about 500 miles of driving, 45 bats flew off into the night 🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇… stay out of trouble my friends 🩵 #goinghome #release #batrehabilitation #freedom #intothenight (fb)
