New GSI Study Finds Mount Laurel Affordable Housing Mandates Have Minimal Impact on Housing Costs or Production in New Jersey The report, Have Mount Laurel Obligations Made New Jersey Housing More Affordable?, analyzes the effects of mandatory and voluntary inclusionary zoning programs under the Fair Housing Act of 1985 and subsequent legislative interpretations. Using synthetic control analysis, the study compared New Jersey to other states—including Pennsylvania, New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Florida, Nevada, Arizona, and California—to estimate what housing production and costs would have looked like in the absence of Mount Laurel obligations. “Are we in a recession? Yes — if you live in one of these 22 states” Mark Zandi, Chief Economist at Moody's Analytics, has found 22 States - including New Jersey - are already experiencing a recession due to a weak economy and significant job losses. This data warns of the potential for a coming national recession. New Jersey's situation contrasts sharply with Pennsylvania, which the analysis finds to be one of the States experiencing economic growth due to their healthcare and education sectors. Mr. Zandi's findings about New Jersey's economy match recent GSI analysis which found the State's GDP in the Second Quarter to be a full point lower than the national average. Job creation, reduced corproate taxes and minimizing regulatory burdens are needed as New Jersey slips farther behind the nation. (fb)
