Delaware & Hudson Railway Historical Society Inc.

The Delaware & Hudson Railway Historical Society Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation, interpretation, and promotion of the history of the Delaware & Hudson Railway and its predecessors. Established as a digital-first organization, the society focuses on using modern technology to connect enthusiasts worldwide.

Mission and Activities

The society's mission extends beyond mere artifact preservation; it aims to keep the spirit of the Delaware & Hudson Railway alive for future generations. This is achieved through the production of the digital newsletter Champlain Shield, hosting of virtual events, and maintenance of an extensive online archive of D&H documents, drawings, maps, and photographs. The archive is available exclusively to members, who can join through flexible membership options as low as $1 per month via Patreon.

Notable Acquisitions and Preservation Efforts

In November 2024, the society acquired the former D&H Alco RS-3 locomotive No. 4085. Built in September 1952, this locomotive spent 28 years in service on the D&H before being operated by other railroads, including the Ontario Eastern Railroad, Genesee Valley Transportation, and New York & Greenwood Lake Railway. It is currently stored at the Erie Turntable in Port Jervis, New York, awaiting relocation and restoration at the Saratoga, Corinth & Hudson Railway, a heritage operation running on a portion of the former D&H Adirondack Branch.

Organizational Structure

Led by President Brad Peterson, the society partners with other preservation organizations to maximize impact while maintaining low overhead costs, leveraging its online presence to connect with a broader audience and support preservation projects by other railroads and organizations. In-person membership events are occasionally held at partner railroads or museums, complementing the society's virtual activities.

It distinguishes itself from other historical societies by its predominantly digital approach, allowing for a wide reach and cost-efficient operations.
