The first weeklong #CarterWorkProject took place in the fall of 1984, when President and Mrs. Carter were joined by dozens of volunteers in the renovation of the six-story, 19-unit Mascot Flats apartment building in New York City. The following year, the Carters returned to finish the renovation that provided rare affordable housing in the city, allowing homeowners to remain in their neighborhood. Earlier this month, just steps away from Mascot Flats, East 6th Street between Aves C & D officially became Jimmy Carter Way. #FlashbackFriday In just two days, the opening ceremony for the 39th Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project will take place in Austin, Texas. Throughout the weeklong event, the first since President Carter's passing, thousands of volunteers will work on the construction of 25 homes while shining a light on the far-reaching impact of affordable homeownership.
