A stable internet connection, a working laptop, and even a quiet place to study are small things that can make the difference between getting into university or missing out. With key steps like standardized tests, such as the SATs and DET, and most college applications now fully online, the digital gap is more critical than ever. One of our member organizations, @zawadiafrica is working to close this gap. From running a computer lab to teaching digital skills, they’re making sure their scholars are ready for a world that’s now mostly online. Last week, HALI Access Members and Friends gathered for our annual Community Contemplation to discuss Preparing and Supporting HALI Students for Success After Admission. We had conversations about the struggles students face once they get into university; from cultural and social isolation to financial shock, academic pressure, and adjusting to new systems. The challenges are real, but so are the solutions. We talked about ways to better support students, like hosting pre-departure sessions on budgeting, family expectations around money, academic mentorship, executive functioning, and the importance of utilizing campus resources such as mental health services. At HALI, we know that getting students into university is only the first step—helping them thrive after admission is just as important.
