As you have likely heard by now, the GOP-led Congress just passed the most harmful Budget and Reconciliation bill this generation has ever seen with just two Republicans and all Democrats voting in opposition. All four Republican congressional representatives in Colorado—Boebert, Crank, Evans, and Hurd— voted in support of this terrible bill despite thousands of their constituents begging them to take a more compassionate and thoughtful approach. As the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless has shared over multiple weeks, this bill will have devastating impacts on low-income households by stripping away their access to healthcare coverage through deep Medicaid cuts and decimating access to food for families through cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). While these cuts won’t happen overnight, they will over time strip critical funding and support for access to these life-saving programs for millions of Americans, including hundreds of thousands of Coloradans. To say we are disappointed isn’t enough. We are aghast at the cruelty and lack of compassion this Congress and this Administration have shown to the people who are truly the backbone of America to ensure the wealthiest in our country can continue to get wealthier—no matter what the cost. All while adding trillions of dollars to the deficit which will burden generations to come. It is simply unbelievable. To all of you who have advocated against this dangerous measure with us over the last few weeks, thank you. Despite being ignored by the Republicans in Congress including those in Colorado who are supposed to protect you, we heard you and many of the Democrats heard you as represented in House Minority Leader Jeffries eight-hour speech giving voice to the American people. Through your efforts, we sent more than 1,870 messages to Congress since April, and we will have to continue to advocate at every turn to push back against the continued harm the current administration and GOP-Congress intend to inflict on friends, neighbors, family members, and community. We are still analyzing all the provisions of this terrible bill and will be providing more updates in the coming weeks as we understand more about timelines and impacts. We will also be highlighting more opportunities for you to use your voice to push back against additional harm. Regardless of this bill’s passage, we remain committed to two fundamental values of CCH: housing as a human right, and high-quality healthcare for all. We will not give up on ensuring everyone has access to the healthcare and housing they need to thrive even in the face of this defeat.
