Hospice Austin had the profound honor of hosting a private graduation ceremony for one of our patients, Qusay Hussein, as he received his doctorate from the University of Texas School of Social Work. Qusay’s journey is nothing short of extraordinary. As a teenager in Iraq, he survived a devastating suicide bombing, endured 70 reconstructive surgeries, and lost his sight. Determined to rebuild his life, he immigrated to the U.S., where he learned both English and Braille. Two years ago, he was diagnosed with cancer, and when managing his pain became too challenging, he came to Hospice Austin's Christopher House. Even in the face of adversity, Qusay remained focused on his dream: walking the stage to receive his PhD. To celebrate his achievement, UT held a private hooding ceremony in our courtyard, joined by Dean Allan Cole, the Associate Dean for Doctoral Programs, and Qusay’s dissertation advisor. As a we are dedicated to creating meaningful moments for our patients, and this was a true testament to that.
