He belongs to the lineage of Mestre Popó do Maculelê and is a disciple of Vivi de Popó. The mestre is 97 years old, with 80 of those years dedicated to capoeira, making him the oldest active capoeira mestre in the world. Mestre Felipe is one of the main guardians of the preservation and safeguarding of Afro-Brazilian culture, and he holds deep knowledge about the craft and the Capoeira Roda. In recent decades, he has stood out as one of Brazil’s foremost capoeira song performers. With one vinyl record and seven CDs, he has recorded a total of 66 songs, both solo and in collaboration. His interest in music began in his youth, influenced by his father through stevedore samba songs. His songs portray the history of capoeira from its origins, with the arrival of Africans in Brazil. The songs composed by the Mestre hold significant importance for Afro-Brazilian culture, especially because they narrate real and unique stories of Black people. Mestre Felipe’s contributions to culture go beyond capoeira and music—he is an authentic griot of the history and events of 20th-century Santo Amaro. (fb)
