AmeriCorps Project Conserve, which was terminated by DOGE last week, not only provided direct support for land and water conservation throughout WNC; it also opened doors for careers in conservation. At Conserving Carolina, one out of every two members of our team was once an AmeriCorps member. One is our Assistant Director of Programs, Rebekah Robinson. During her first semester of law school in New Orleans, Hurricane Katrina devastated the area - which led her to take a summer AmeriCorps position assisting people with legal issues resulting from the disaster. She went on to join Conserving Carolina's team by serving in AmeriCorps Project Conserve. Sixteen years later, she is a big part of our work to protect land, expand the Hickory Nut Gorge State Trail, and create rail trails. Many conservation leaders in WNC and beyond got their start through AmeriCorps Project Conserve and this program will be greatly missed! (fb)
