Provided by Senior Services For South Sound On August 5, when Lacey residents cast their votes in the primary election, they will have the chance to weigh in on Proposition 1, which would create a Lacey Metropolitan Park District (MPD) to provide ongoing funding to maintain, operate, and improve parks, trails, recreational facilities, and programs. As you consider your vote, we'd like you to know that Senior Services for South Sound is in favor of Proposition 1. Among the proposed areas of funding for the MPD is the Virgil Clarkson Lacey Senior Center, which is greatly in need of more space. Potential improvements to the center include facility and parking expansion and additional access. If you visit our Lacey center, you know that we are bursting at the seams. We host more than a hundred seniors each day in tight quarters that are hazardous to folks using walkers and those who are unstable on their feet. Demographic forecasts call for the senior-age population to increase dramatically over the next 20 years, so improvements to our center are going to become a necessity if we are to meet increased demand. If Proposition 1 passes, it does mean a slight increase in property taxes, and we recognize this could be hard on low-income seniors. Nevertheless, we wanted to reach out today to let you know how the creation of the MPD will provide funding to enhance the Virgil Clarkson Lacey Senior Center.
