Dear friends, At 7pm last Friday, we received an email from the National Endowment for the Arts saying our grant to support the Core Writers Group had been pulled because it no longer fits the goals of the current administration. Had they honored their commitment to us, we would have to sign on to their terms of no DEI: no diversity, equity, or inclusion. To be clear, we would have to agree to homogeny, inequity, and exclusion. It’s absurd, and insulting, and dangerous. That would fly in the face not only of our mission but our basic humanity. What we have is rare. Millions of lives have been touched by TheatreWorks and other arts organizations, many of which have been hit by this termination of grants for the arts. TheatreWorks—and all arts organizations—are building a future powered by ingenuity, connectivity all in the service of a larger mission: bringing more art into the world, expanding arts education, and ensuring everyone in our community sees themselves reflected on our stage. There is immense pride in this locally grown, nationally known, Tony Award–winning professional theater that continues to entertain, inspire and captivate audiences. And you make it possible. We’re committed to joy, empathy, and storytelling that connects us all. And this promise isn’t ours alone—it belongs to all of us. Please seize this moment to be the change, fund our future, and boldly stand up for the arts. Thank you.
