Hike with Mike and Abby! "A little after 8 Kadi brought out Abby, who gave an anxious bark and then was ready for a good hike. Her exuberant weaving as we headed down the driveway to the road called for advanced over-the-head hand-to-hand leash work, and after a quick roll under the wire fence we were ready for a classic hike around the Loop. 1. Up the Draw. Even at 8 in the morning the parabolic shape of the Draw concentrates the sun's heat and makes it the hottest part of the hike. We crunched our way through dried up weeds and welcomed a stop at the rock halfway up for a bit of water and a treat 2. Up the Upper Ridge. This included an exciting and noisy encounter (on Abby's side) with a large, placid black lab and its human. 3. The Promontory. Sitting on needle-sharp rocks with my feet wrapped in Abby's paws gave little incentive for enjoying the view of the main Carbonate trails and the town a thousand feet below. 4. The Traverse to... 5: Down the back side of the Loop. The old jeep road from the mining days is almost completely obscured now by weeds and bushes. Abby seemed to lose her pep and lagged behind, uninterested in water or treats. 6. Up an old road cut back to the top of the Draw. Abby perked up a bit. 7. Traverse to the knob overlooking the shelter. 8. The final steep ridge down to the road. The last resting/petting rock was a chance for Abby to have a sip of water and ignore a treat.
