From Jose's mother, Heidy: "My son's name is Jose he is diagnosed with SMA-2 (Spinal Muscular Atrophy) He has a lot of limitations since his disease deteriorates his muscles. He is wheelchair bound and is losing his upper body strength. He is suffering from really bad scoliosis due to his muscles not being strong to hold his spine in place. He gets a lot of back pains, his legs are severely contracted due to him sitting and laying all day. He loves to draw, play video games and go on different adventures. He is very kind, friendly and outgoing. He wants to be an editor when he grows up. He also loves playing Roblox and travel. I need help getting my car converted into a wheelchair car, I've been trying different companies but I havent been able to find a company that meets our needs. My dream is to have a wheelchair accessible apartment, right now I live in a 3rd floor walk up and his weight is killing my back little by little. I currently live with my mom because she's the only support I have while I work". Spinal muscular atrophy type II (also called Dubowitz disease) is characterized by muscle weakness that develops in children between ages 6 and 12 months. Children with this type can sit without support, although they may need help getting to a seated position. However, as the muscle weakness worsens later in childhood, affected individuals may need support to sit. Individuals with spinal muscular atrophy type II cannot stand or walk unaided. They often have involuntary trembling (tremors) in their fingers, a spine that curves side-to-side (scoliosis), and respiratory muscle weakness that can be life-threatening. (fb)
