NYC Environmental Justice Alliance: Over 30 years of fighting for healthier and more just communities - one block at a time. #OntheGroundAttheTable Founded in 1991, the New York City Environmental Justice Alliance (NYC-EJA) is a non-profit citywide membership network linking grassroots organizations of color in their struggle for environmental justice. NYCEJA became a 501(c)(3) corporation in 1995. NYCEJA empowers its Member Organizations to fight against environmental racism by helping them organize their communities and by providing legal analysis and technical support they need to engage in effective advocacy. NYCEJA works in partnership with its 15 Member Organizations. NYCEJA does not duplicate the work of its Member Organizations in the community. Instead, it helps to leverage the work that the community-based organizations (CBO's) are already doing by providing technical assistance, coordination of advocacy efforts, contacts and introductions, and by helping to replicate projects and activities that have proven successful in one of the member communities. Unlike most mainstream environmental organizations, NYCEJA is led by its grassroots Member groups. The majority of NYCEJA’s Board is comprised of its member organizations, who set policy and guide program development.
