ICYMI: On October 6, 2025, Mary E. Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell and Shimon Sakaguchi were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2025 for their work on peripheral immune tolerance. Their research has brought a new understanding of regulatory T cells (Tregs), which could one day benefit not only patients with autoimmune diseases, but also patients with cancer and patients undergoing organ transplants. One challenge that must be overcome before putting this discovery into practice is finding a way to make large number of stable Tregs. Options include growing Tregs in the laboratory or injecting drugs to generate the production of Tregs inside the body. NEW: Laureate Shimon Sakaguchi has published two papers in Science Translational Medicine detailing new research that could yield a third option for creating new Tregs. Sakaguchi and colleagues had previously discovered how to switch on the Foxp3 gene to turn normal T cells into "induced" Tregs (iTregs), but the transformation only lasted for a couple of days. The team has since discovered a new protocol that creates longer-lasting iTregs and has been successfully tested in mice. For details, check out the link below! (fb)
