IAVI welcomes news that the World Health Organization (WHO) Pandemic Accord was adopted by UN member states today at #WHA78. This treaty sets forth conditions for a more coordinated and equitable approach to global pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response (PPPR) following COVID-19. Among the treaty's many important provisions, we are especially pleased to see Article 9 call for sustained investment in and support of global R&D partnerships, including public-private partnerships, that center institutions in low-income countries with high disease burdens. However, there is still work to be done. WHO member states must further negotiate the terms of the Pathogen Access and Benefits Sharing (PABS) annex, which outlines conditions critical to ensure access to pathogen samples, sequence data, and potential benefits. IAVI encourages swift efforts to ratify the complete agreement and formalize this critical step forward for global preparedness. Read our statement 👇 (fb)
