Roadless areas protect the best of what’s left: clean water, native trout, and irreplaceable recreation opportunities. Recently, our president and CEO Chris Wood joined RadioWest to explain why the Roadless Rule matters for our National Forests and the fish that depend on them. “National Forests are the lungs of the nation, and they’re also the arteries of the nation because so much drinking water comes from National Forests. And so they’ve done a tremendous job to basically help to recover the ecological health of our national forests. And, in the context of doing that, provide a supply of timber, and forage, and oil and gas, and other multiple use benefits. And that, I think, is being lost in this conversation. It’s as though these Roadless Areas are being put up there as though they’re quasi-Wilderness—they are not. In the state of Utah , almost 85% of the roadless areas are open for grazing. 30% of the motorized trails in the state are in roadless areas.
