Earlier this month, NBFJA members and staff embarked on a mystical journey across waters to the historic community of Hogg Hummock on Sapelo Island, GA. Our call? Strategize for the liberated future of the island and lay hands on Black land through Kazi work. “Kazi” is a Swahili word meaning “work” and grounds us in a powerful model for collective growth. Together, our Kazi Mob cleared overgrowth on the land of one of the original families of the community, where a storefront has been restored and remodeled and now houses the Hogg Hummock Artisan Market stewarded by @mysticrootsfoundation. Descedent, Reginald Hall, had not seen his property line in years, and can now enforce the maintenance of the government-owned property next door. The people of this Gullah-Geechee sea island, are continuing their generations-long fight to not only defend their land but create a liberated, self-determined future where they feed and heal themselves. The beauty of Sapelo’s land, community, and waters cannot truly be conveyed in mere words. We give thanks for the new breath that entered our bodies, the calmness that enveloped our spirits, and the oh so delicious and warming food we nourished ourselves with (shout out @mysticroots7)!
