An update from Salem Bike Vision summer newsletter: On Saturday, August 16th the Super Casual Bike Rides group joined us for a family ride from Riverfront Park to Minto Island Growers for lunch. We had perfect weather, and everyone had a great time. A huge thank you to Minto Island Growers for hosting us, the location was spectacular, the food amazing, and the conversations with fellow riders was much enjoyed. Thank you to everyone who joined us! Ghost Bike Program As we reported in last month's email, on July 10th, Jeremy Wanak was biking on Southeast Delaney Rd when he was struck by a driver at high speeds. He died of his injuries at Salem Hospital. Jeremy’s death was avoidable, and we are heartbroken at the loss his family and his community are experiencing right now. With his family's permission, we have set up a "Ghost Bike" memorial at the site of his crash. The Northwest Hub generously donated an older bike that we painted white. The all-white bike, commonly referred to as a Ghost Bike, is a way that communities across the world memorialize the individuals who have been killed while biking. While we hope to never need to put out another Ghost Bike, with the family's permission, we intend to memorialize future fatalities in this way. If you would like to help, be a part of this, please consider donating to the cause. Your donation will help buy the paint and needed locks. Please add “Ghost Bike Program” in the special instructions and we’ll be sure to set it aside for use on this program. Ghost Bike Program Donation New Protected Bike Lane As part of a much larger project, the Oregon Department of Transportation built a new protected bike lane on Commercial Street NE between Union Street and Division Street. The concrete separators were added to the project as a result of our engagement with the both the City and ODOT early in the planning stages of the project. This project is an example of the kind of outcomes our collective work produces. This is the first instance of physical protection on the state-owned network in the City of Salem and is the first section of protection at street-level that extends for a block anywhere in the City. This small project now connects the Union Street Bikeway to the two-way off-street cycletrack by the Union Gospel Mission and is one step closer to safely connecting North Salem to the city center. Fall 2025 Every fall, organizations across the country host a Week Without Driving, a national movement to help folks, particularly policy makers, realize what it means to live without a car. SBV is in full support of the movement and asks folks to join in the cause. This year the event will be held over the week of September 29th - October 2nd. We are working with our partners at Cherriots, Safe Routes to School, and our Ward 1 City Councilor, Paul Tigan, to move a proclamation forward at Salem City Council. Week Without Driving Groups Rides Super Casual Bike Ride meets every Saturday at the bottom of the Soap Box Derby Hill at 11am with wheels down at 11:30. Latest info on all Super Casual Bike Rides can be found on their Instagram page. The Salem Bicycle Club has multiple rides every week, here is a link to their calendar Events - Salem Bicycle Club. There is a small $25 annual fee to join their group, but the community is well worth the investment. Among their many rides, SBC recently started a new Family Ride every 1st Saturday.
