Matt Anderson, our Alabama State Representative and field staff member, served over 23 years in the Marine Corps. He began his career as an enlisted Marine, eventually rising to the rank of Major. Over the course of five combat tours, Matt served as an Infantryman, Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Technician, and EOD Officer. On June 26, 2008, while serving with Marine Special Operations in Afghanistan, Matt’s team was ambushed during a mission to capture High Value Targets. While under heavy enemy fire and providing aid to wounded teammates, Matt was injured by fragmentation to his arms and legs. The intense battle resulted in 14 Purple Hearts, including his, and multiple medals for valor. After retiring, Matt struggled with the transition to civilian life—until he discovered the healing power of the outdoors. What started with bowhunting evolved into a deep appreciation for all types of hunting and the camaraderie that comes with it. “I didn’t grow up hunting,” Matt shared. “But in the woods and on the water, I found patience, quiet, and healing.” In 2024, Matt attended a VHO waterfowl hunt and immediately connected with the mission. “Even though I didn’t know anyone before the trip, it felt like being with old friends. VHO doesn’t just provide outdoor experiences—it creates opportunities for healing, learning, and lifelong friendships.” Since then, Matt has stepped up to help lead the way in Alabama, giving back to other veterans through the very experiences that helped him heal. “I wanted to be a part of it because I know how much veterans benefit from it.” We’re proud to have Matt on our team and even prouder to share his story. #PurpleHeartDay #CourageInAction #ForeverGrateful (fb)
