California Teachers Association

Overview

The California Teachers Association (CTA) is a prominent U.S. nonprofit organization and teachers' trade union, founded in May 1863. With its origins rooted in advocacy for educators and public education, CTA has evolved into one of the most influential voices in California’s educational and political landscapes.

History

CTA was initially formed as the California Educational Society by John Swett, the Superintendent of Public Instruction. The association's early achievements include the establishment of free public schools for all children in California in 1866, a marked improvement from the initial years when only a few hundred students attended these schools and teachers were underpaid and poorly prepared.

Over the years, CTA has achieved numerous legislative victories. Key milestones include securing free textbooks for all students (1911), creating the California State Teachers’ Retirement System (1913), and advocating for the passage of Proposition 98 in 1988, which guarantees a significant portion of the state's budget for education. In 1975, CTA sponsored the Rodda Act, securing collective bargaining rights for K-14 educators in California.

Mission and Goals

CTA’s mission is to protect and promote the well-being of its members, improve teaching and learning conditions, and advance the cause of free, universal, and quality public education for all students. The organization focuses on representing its members in governmental relations, strengthening its role as a voice for public education, and ensuring that the civil rights of all children and adults are protected.

CTA works toward these objectives by executing programs that enhance education quality, representing members in bargaining and career development matters, and maintaining a strong membership base to defend educators' interests.

Membership and Affiliations

As of recent reports, CTA has over 325,000 members, encompassing not only teachers but also counselors, school librarians, psychologists, nurses, and other education professionals. It is the largest state affiliate of the National Education Association (NEA), which itself has over three million members nationally.

Advocacy and Influence

CTA is known for its robust advocacy on education issues and its significant impact on California politics. It supports legislation that benefits educators and students while advocating for social justice and human rights. Through its strong political presence, CTA continues to shape public policy on education in California.
