~TEACHABLE TUESDAY~ Bison cows have a much smaller udder and teats for their calves to nurse from. Because bison are not bred for milk production, like dairy cows are, they don't need a large udder. Their teat canal, where the milk comes down for the calf, is also much narrower, further proving that milk production is not in their genetic makeup. Watching a bison calf nurse, you will see it bumping, sometimes quite hard, at the cow's udder. This action causes the milk to release into the small teats and allows the calf to nurse.
