One of the most devastating and defining symptoms of Sickle Cell Disease is pain — and not just any pain. We’re talking about pain so intense, there are no words to describe it. Pain that comes suddenly, with no warning. Pain that lands people in emergency departments, time and time again. Pain that disrupts lives, school, work, and moments that should be joyful. These episodes are called sickle cell pain crises, and they are often invisible to the outside world.But just because you can't see it, doesn't mean it's not real. What’s worse? This pain is routinely minimized — especially for African American patients — due to decades of racial bias and stigma surrounding sickle cell disease. Too many people with SCD are labeled as “drug-seeking” or “dramatic” instead of being given the care, compassion, and pain relief they deserve.
