American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics
The American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG) is a nonprofit organization in the United States, focused on certifying professionals in the field of medical genetics and genomics. It was incorporated in 1980 with the mission to serve the public and medical profession by establishing professional certification standards and promoting lifelong learning, as well as excellence in medical genetics and genomics.
Mission and Objectives
The primary goal of ABMGG is to improve the standards of clinical care in medical genetics by certifying individuals in various specialties such as clinical genetics and genomics, clinical biochemical genetics, clinical cytogenetics, and clinical molecular genetics. The organization also aims to ensure the state-of-the-art application of genetic knowledge in healthcare through its certification process and accreditation of training programs.
Certification Process
ABMGG offers certifying examinations for medical genetics professionals. These exams are given every two years and require candidates to have completed at least two years in an ABMGG-accredited training program. For those pursuing clinical genetics and a laboratory specialty, three years of training are necessary.
Accreditation of Training Programs
Until the end of 2023, ABMGG accredited laboratory training programs. However, starting in 2018, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) began taking over the accreditation responsibilities for laboratory fellowships in clinical biochemical genetics and laboratory genetics and genomics.
Governance and Recognition
The ABMGG is recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) as one of its 24 member boards. This recognition underlines the organization's role in maintaining the standards of medical genetics and genomics.
Financial Overview
As a nonprofit, the ABMGG generates revenue primarily from program services. The organization has reported annual revenues ranging from approximately $1 million to over $1.8 million in recent years. Its total assets have also increased, reflecting its stable financial position.
Executive Leadership
The organization is led by a Board of Directors, with Dr. Katrina Dipple serving as the current Chair from 2023-2025. Recent appointments include Darrel Waggoner, MD, as the Associate Chief Executive Officer, effective March 2025.
Tax Status
Donations to the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics are not tax-deductible, as it is classified under a category similar to business leagues rather than a charitable organization.
