Preserving historic districts buildings and landscapes that are New Havens heritage. Proposals for Improvements to the Green CharacterDefining Features of The New Haven Green Dating to the citys earliest days the New Haven Green has served as market place parade ground and cemetery as the site of churches and other public buildings as a place for all New Havens people to meet formally and informally and as a visible symbol of the invisible bonds that tie us together as a community. In recognition of the Greens importance it was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1971. Currently the City and the Proprietors of the Common and Undivided Lands are considering proposals for improvements to the Green.
