National Latina/o Psychological Association

The National Latina/o Psychological Association (NLPA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing psychological education, training, science, and practice within the Hispanic/Latina/o communities in the United States. Founded initially as the National Hispanic Psychological Association, it was re-established under its current name to reflect broader inclusivity[3].

Mission

The NLPA's mission is to create a supportive professional community that enhances the health, mental health, and well-being of Hispanic/Latina/o populations[4][5]. This is achieved through educational development, scientific research, professional practice, and organizational changes.

Ethical Guidelines

The NLPA has developed Ethical Guidelines to guide its members in their professional activities. These guidelines emphasize cultural values such as allocentrism, familismo, personalismo, respeto, simpatía, dignidad, and confianza, reflecting the collective consciousness and spiritual traditions within Latinx communities[1]. They encourage members to engage with local communities and address systemic issues that impact mental health services[1].

Advocacy and Professional Development

The NLPA advocates for culturally responsive practices in psychology, promoting education and research that address the unique challenges faced by Latina/o communities. It supports professional development through training and mentorship programs[2][5].

Recognition and Affiliations

The NLPA is recognized by the American Psychological Association (APA) as one of the five Ethnic Minority Psychological Associations[4]. This recognition underscores its role in advancing ethnic minority psychology and contributing to broader discussions on cultural and ethnic issues within the field[2].
