The sanitarium thrived and included numerous buildings and facilities dedicated to care and research.

Following the discovery of effective antibiotic treatments for tuberculosis in the mid-20th century, the sanitarium's focus began to shift. In 1954, the Trudeau Sanatorium closed due to the widespread availability of antibiotics. However, in 1956, Dr. Frank Trudeau, Edward Trudeau's grandson, initiated the transition to a research center focused on basic biological studies, particularly in immunology. By 1964, the Trudeau Laboratory opened, marking the beginning of the Trudeau Institute as we know it today.
