There is no more important question that we can face in life than “What do you think about the Christ?” Ultimately, we know that God’s Christ, his anointed one, is Jesus. As the God-Man, he came for us and our salvation, dying on the Cross in the place of sinners and rising from the dead so that we might be made new. And so, coming to grips with what we think about Jesus is the one most important thing we can do. This passage, 1 Samuel 18, raises that question for us by showing us different ways in which people answered the question, “What do you think about David, the Christ, the anointed one?” Some responded with trust and friendship, others with fear, still others with hypocrisy. Yet everyone in the passage had a response to the Christ. And so must we—not to David or even to Jesus as some kind of historical figure. Rather, we must respond to Jesus Christ as the once and forever king, who presently rules from heaven and who will bring all humanity before him in judgment. What do you think of him, the Christ?
