On this Day in Fayetteville and Washington County History - September 9, 1974 - 51 Years ago on a Sunday morning in Fayetteville, this Army helicopter from Fort Sill, Oklahoma, carried and placed the steeple on the Washington County Courthouse, a spectacle for anyone who saw it fly across town. The Northwest Arkansas Times reported that the entire Fayetteville Police Department, Washington County Sheriff’s Office, and 30 members of the National Guard were on standby to keep spectators at a distance as the steeple was being placed, replacing one put there in 1965.
