It was such a treat to participate in Eastside High School’s Resource & Career Fair today! Talking with students about what kinds of careers exist in the #MentalHealth / #BehavioralHealth field, how they can prepare for those careers, and what the payoff would be at the end (💲💲💲) was an absolute delight. Read on! #ClinicalTherapy: Work directly with clients A great fit for people who: - are empathetic and supportive - communicate well verbally and non-verbally - enjoy collaborating with others to create positive change #Research: Help advance the field A great fit for people who: - think analytically to break down complex problems - are motivated by curiosity - can be productive on their own and enjoy working independently #Clinical career types include: Psychotherapy (aka Talk Therapy) as a - Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT), - Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), or - Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) - Art Therapy (ATR-BC) or Music Therapy (MT-BC) - Medication management as a Psychiatrist (MD) or Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) - Working in or with schools as a School Psychologist or a Licensed Educational Psychologist Most Licensed Clinicians earn a master’s degree, then work under supervision as an Associate Clinician for two years as part of the qualification for their license. (Psychologists and Psychiatrists earn a doctorate.) There are also jobs in which you can work directly with clients before becoming a clinician, such as a Certified Peer Support Specialist, Alcohol & Drug Counselor, or Case Manager. #Research branches include: - Abnormal psychology - Behavioral psychology - Biological psychology - Clinical psychology - Cognitive psychology - Comparative psychology - Development psychology - Forensic psychology - Industrial-organizational psychology - Social psychology Earning a doctorate is the industry standard for a research psychologist, which is followed by a post-doctoral fellowship and then state licensure.
