Meet Carmelita Gonzalez 👋🏽 Venezuela-born Wayuu weaver who works with our Innovation Team in La Guajira, Colombia 🧶 Taught to weave by her mother, she finds deep pride in creating mochilas and loves experimenting with new designs that reflect her culture. A devoted mother of six, Carmelita dreams of giving her children the chance to become professionals while also one day studying to become a teacher herself, so she can guide others in her community and pass on the art of weaving. Carmelita was the first artisan in our innovation course to finish her design. Swipe right to see her new creation, inspired by the squash blossom (flor de ahuyama) 👉🏽 Squash (“üit”) is a nutritional staple for Wayuu communities, used in a traditional soup that combines corn, beans and squash (“the three sisters”) and goat (chivo). Beyond nourishment, the squash also holds medicinal value— in traditional healing, its leaves are used to prepare remedies for newborns 🌱 The colors of her design reflect the different parts of the plant— green for the leaves, yellow and mustard for the flower, and gray for the stem.
