The New Hope Covenant Church at the northeast corner of 12th Street and D Street in Sparks is pictured in 1954. This church was originally built as the Emmanuel First Baptist Church and since 1976 it has been listed on the Nevada Register of Historic Places. Shortly after its opening Nevada's 9th Governor and our city's namesake John Sparks donated an elaborate stained-glass window that was once proudly displayed in the south end of the sanctuary to catch the morning sun. The Sparks industrial area is seen in this aerial photo that was around 1995. The area was largely developed in the 1960's and 1970's as companies and new industry moved to the area to take advantage of Nevada's free port laws and low tax structure for warehousing and distribution. #SpiritofSparks (fb)
