The world ends its #JazzMonth2024 celebration on April 30th with #InternationalJazzDay. In recognition, I’m sharing my February 2024 performance of jazz standard, “I Wish You Love” in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil at Little Africa’s Dida Bar e Restaurante with the amazing El Miraculoso SambaJazz band. Look for a live concert album coming out this summer with the help of my terrific, Grammy-winning music producer, @benwmsonbass, and the support of the sound engineers of @boconera73filmes. All net album proceeds support Black Philanthropy Month. Jazz singing-songwriting (which I consider psalms) is and always has been my life’s soundtrack even before I knew people called our music “jazz.” From my African American roots in the sonics and culture of Gullah Geechee South Carolina, The Black Church, The Philly Sound as well as living in Nigeria’s Yoruba communities, my jazz is an embodied way of sensing and moving in the world. Now it’s being honed and inspired by many master teachers and artists in a constant process of learning. You have my eternal gratitude and awe, including Carl Walker, Stanford Jazz Workshop The Dynamic Miss Faye Carol, José James, Madeline Eastman, among so many others. Whether I’ve kept it as private spiritual healing practice or public performance, it’s always calling me to #jazzlife, improvise, pivot, innovate, resist, heal, grow, and give in times good and bad. In its different styles, jazz holds the full spectrum of human emotions and all Black music genres. I’m most proud that it has become a soundtrack of the world, an indication of my culture’s universal resilience and power. So, on this #JazzDay, #IWishYouLove and remember that jazz is so much more than music.
