This past Sunday, we gathered as a community to celebrate May Festival—Presidio Hill School’s oldest and most joyful tradition, dating back to the 1950s. The day was filled with student poetry recitations, songs, open mic moments, and plenty of laughter and games. Families spread out picnic blankets, shared food, and enjoyed the sunshine together. One of the most cherished parts of the day was the Dragon Parade, a tradition with deep roots in our school’s history. Originally choreographed in the 1970s by the renowned Anna Halprin to mark PHS’s return to Washington Street after a devastating fire, the parade has become a vibrant symbol of resilience and creativity. In 2002, PHS drama teacher Janna Sobel reimagined the tradition, breathing new life into it—something our community continues to celebrate each year with joy and pride. Last month, our 5th grade students embarked on an unforgettable overnight adventure to Angel Island. Throughout the trip, they brought curiosity, creativity, kindness, and a sense of humor to every experience. The visit deepened their study of the Chinese Exclusion Act by connecting classroom learning to history in place—on the very island that once served as an immigration station for thousands of immigrants from Asia in the early 20th century. Beyond the academic connections, the overnight offered time for reflection, shared meals, and laughter—making it a meaningful bonding experience for the entire class. (fb)
