Join us for the second program in conjunction with our special exhibition on the history of Rosenwald schools. Historians and former students will reflect on the innovative educational practices that shaped these schools and the challenges of preserving them in Texas today. The 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision declared "separate but equal" unconstitutional, paving the way for school integration and the larger civil rights movement. In the aftermath, nearly 530 Rosenwald schools across rural Texas were closed as Black students enrolled in previously segregated schools. Long abandoned, these buildings are now the focus of restoration efforts to honor their legacy as bedrocks of African American communities. Selected by Nazi doctor Josef Mengele, Eva and her twin sister Miriam endured daily medical experiments at Auschwitz. Fueled by a fierce will to live, Eva and her sister survived until their liberation by Soviet forces in January 1945. Hear Eva’s story in her own words and engage with her interactive testimony in our Dimensions in Testimony Theater. (fb)
