Tulips? On a tree? The colorful blooms that currently ornament local stands of Liriodendron tulipifera (aka “Tulip Trees or “Tulip Poplars”) DO look a lot like the spring flowers we know as tulips. But plants can trick you! These native hardwood trees, which grow unusually tall and straight in moist soil all along the Lehigh River, are in the Magnolia family — NOT closely related to tulips (Lily family) or to poplars (Willow family). How can soggy soil support such a tall tree? Tulip tree roots burrow deep and spread wide, reducing riverbank erosion. Check them out as you walk our River Trail! (fb)
