We are excited to share that on Friday, September 27th Governor Gavin Newsom signed AB 2505 (Gabriel), a bill that will require practicing lawyers in California to report the number of pro bono hours that they have completed in the past year when paying their annual licensing fees to the State Bar of California. By asking attorneys to track and report the hours they volunteer each year, this new law will help to bridge the “justice gap” of people looking for legal help who cannot afford private attorneys and who cannot access free legal services. LAAC applauds Governor Newsom and the Legislature for prioritizing low-income Californians and advancing to close the justice gap by increasing the delivery of legal services on matters like debt relief, immigration matters, eviction defense, and family court.
