On this World Mental Health Day, we want to share a story that blends science and compassion. Meet Danylo Shudrenko ’26, a psychology and computer science double major who spent his summer at Johns Hopkins exploring the neural underpinnings of anorexia nervosa. Using diffusion tensor imaging, a specialized MRI technique, he compared brain scans of individuals with this disorder to those of healthy controls and found meaningful differences in white-matter tracts associated with social cognition and inhibitory control. Danylo’s personal connection to his work is very personal. He hopes to return to his native Ukraine and apply his knowledge to help people living with post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and other challenges exacerbated by the country’s long-running war with Russia.
