Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Coalition

The Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Coalition (SVBC) is a nonprofit organization established in 2008 through the merger of two local bike clubs. The coalition's mission is to ensure that everyone in the Shenandoah Valley can easily and comfortably walk and bike as part of their daily life, whether for recreation or transportation.

History

The SVBC was formed by combining the Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Club, established in 1982 as a road cycling club, and a mountain biking club started in 1995. This merger aimed to create a broader-based community organization that transcended traditional bike club activities. The coalition transitioned from an all-volunteer organization to one with a staff, allowing it to expand its focus and impact.

Vision and Goals

The SVBC envisions building communities that are stronger, healthier, and full of joy. Its core values include stewardship, generosity, inclusion, and a belief in the transformative power of bicycles. The vision is supported by four key actions:

  • Engage: Building connections between prospective riders, current bicyclists, and civic leaders to create vibrant communities.
  • Empower: Developing tools and resources so everyone can choose whether, where, and how to ride.
  • Build: Constructing exceptional riding opportunities, including trails, greenways, and safe routes.
  • Ride: Encouraging joyful riding as a sign of better communities.

Geographic Area

The Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Coalition serves the Central Shenandoah Valley region of Virginia, including Augusta, Rockingham, and Shenandoah counties, along with the cities of Waynesboro, Staunton, Harrisonburg, and Woodstock.

Initiatives

The coalition focuses on several initiatives:

  • Advocacy: Advocating for funding to make biking and walking safe, viewing these efforts as long-term investments in community infrastructure.
  • Trail Development: Working on developing and maintaining trails on public lands and greenways to promote safe and accessible biking and walking routes.
  • Community Engagement: Organizing community events, such as trail work sessions and bike camping trips, to foster a sense of community and promote the value of outdoor activities.

Tax Information

The Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Coalition operates as a nonprofit organization with an Employer Identification Number (EIN) of 342016415.
