Ribbon cutting at the San Miguel Middle School 🎊✂️🎀 Last year, we started building this classroom. Our friends from @theimpactmvmt and @protechstaffing have been part of the project from the beginning. They raised the funds, built the classroom and even donated school supplies. Last Friday, we officially inaugurated the classroom. It was a party that gathered students, friends and the community in general. María works in the mornings, selling vegetables. In the afternoons, she works at a taco place. On Mondays, she comes to our community center to learn to read and write. Victoria is a mother of six children. Years ago, she was told that women should stay at home, cooking and cleaning, instead of attending school. She is now on the verge of earning her elementary diploma at the age of 30. Her daughter started elementary school last year. Sonia is the teacher. She came to Maneadero long ago. She completed middle school and is now teaching in the community, primarily as a volunteer rather than an employee. She is glad to teach other women, even if Spanish is not her first language, and even if her students are learning Spanish as their second language. It is never too late to begin again. Today, we celebrate International Literacy Day. What a perfect moment to show our appreciation for the students in the Adult Education Program. Every month, around forty students take their exams to move one step closer to earning their elementary education diploma. We teach them and provide them with the school supplies. We offer tutoring and provide computers so they can take their exams. We are teachers and companions. We are proud of our students. We admire their efforts to pursue their dreams, even if the timing is not perfect. We celebrate their achievements and rejoice when they start writing their names or adding numbers.
