June 15 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day and we want to shed some light on a new type of scam targeting older adults in the U.S. called "Pig Butchering". The name comes from the agricultural practice of fattening pigs before slaughter, symbolizing how scammers "fatten" their victims with false attention before exploiting them financially. Here's how it works: ⚠️ Luring: Scammers often initiate contact through social media or dating apps (LinkedIn has become a big source of contacts), building a trusting relationship with their victims. 📊 Investment Pitch: Once trust is established, scammers introduce an investment opportunity, often in cryptocurrency or other high-risk ventures. 🖥️ Fake Platforms: Victims are directed to fraudulent investment platforms controlled by the scammers​. 🏧 Initial Gains: To build credibility, scammers may allow victims to make small profits initially. 🔴 Pressure for More: As the victim invests more, the pressure to continue investing increases. 💸 Disappearance: Eventually, the scammers disappear, leaving victims with significant financial losses.
