This Hispanic Heritage Month we’re remembering Mexican-American labor leader & civil rights activist Cesar Chavez. After being forced from their homestead in Arizona during the Great Depression, Chavez’s family migrated to California as farm workers. Facing dual systems of anti-Latino prejudice & economic exploitation, Cesar drew strength from his despair. Beginning as an active union member on picket lines, then becoming an organizer in a Latino civil rights organization, he eventually went on to found the National Farm Workers Association, now United Farm Workers (UFW). Chavez went on to lead the historic California Grape Strike which won major improvements to wages, benefits, & safety measures for farmworks while also strengthening the right of workers to organize.
