His recent opinion editorial in The @columbusdispatch addresses how House Bill 88 is harmful to victims, expensive for taxpayers and fails to address real issues surrounding accountability. *During my term as director of the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction, I consistently called for accountability for people who provide dangerous and illegal drugs to Ohioans, particularly our young citizens who are trying to find their way in life. But not only does HB 88 radically depart from Ohio’s already-tough penalties for these offenders, it also harshly punishes addicted Ohioans who desperately need treatment, not a prolonged prison sentence. Instead of funding necessary intensive treatment that can make a difference and change lives, this bill would lock away struggling addicts instead of focusing on the actual perpetrators distributing fentanyl. Alliance for Safety and Justice urges Michigan policymakers to use the Public Safety and Violence Prevention Trust Fund Act (PSTF) to fund services for victims of violent crime, trauma recovery services and community violence intervention via the in the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA). Crime survivor Shari Ware writes about PSTF in the Lansing State Journal. "The Public Safety and Violence Prevention Trust Fund Act recognizes that victims should not be punished twice: first by the crime itself and secondly by financial devastation. But some of the current budget language has reduced funding for Community Violence Intervention and provided only a small increase to the Victim Rights Fund. What Michigan needs is for legislators to recognize that both initiatives need to be funded at a level that will actually make a difference. " … Michigan’s first Trauma Recovery Center (TRC), located in Detroit, celebrated one year of addressing survivors’ urgent needs with compassion and practical support - from distributing over 100 gun locks and covering essentials like car seats and groceries, to providing nearly 400 Lyft rides and assisting victims with healthcare, housing, and employment. Together, these efforts show a comprehensive approach to safety, stability, and dignity for survivors in our community. It also underscores why lawmakers should pass a budget that includes $2 million dollars a year to fund the TRC at Henry Ford hospital."
