The Northern Michigan Opioid Response Consortium (NMORC) team recently provided two Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) trainings for staff of both Turtle Creek Casino & Hotel and Leelanau Sands Casino & Lodge. NMORC, a program under the Michigan Center for Rural Health, elevates MHFA as a priority throughout the NMORC region. The course, not unlike First Aid courses for physical health, is an evidence-based, early-intervention course that teaches participants about mental health and substance use challenges. Participants learn how to recognize and respond to signs and symptoms of a mental health/substance use challenge, as well as how to provide initial support until connection with appropriate professional help can be arranged. The course teaches how to recognize risk factors and warning signs for mental health and addiction concerns, strategies to help someone whether in a crisis or noncrisis situation, and where to turn for help.
